Dave’s Undergraduate Work
To start, David A Smith began his educational career at Mountain View Junior College in South Dallas in 1993. During this time, he found and worked with his mentor, Dr. Euclides F. Torres, Ph. D., the University of Havana. At first, Dave’s visits to Dr. Torres’ office hours consisted of asking questions about trigonometry or other classwork. Eventually, Dr. Torres started teaching Dave advanced concepts and equations in topics like Real Analysis.
Dr. Torres began giving Dave problems involving the counting of real numbers and graphing trigonometric functions to work on in his studies. His influence on Dave was astronomical and helped forge a lifelong passion for mathematics. After a successful start to his academic career, he transferred to the University of Texas at Arlington in 1994. Early here, Dave began work in the mathematics department pursuing a B.S. in math. Dave brought credits with him from Mountain View Junior College to accelerate his course progress. Both in 1993 and 1994, Dave won the Math Department Student of the year awards. By 1996, Dave graduated with his B.S. in Mathematics from UTA with his eyes on graduate work.
Dave A Smith began graduate school to pursue an M.S. in mathematics directly after completing his bachelor’s degree. He stayed at UTA, where he enrolled in advanced mathematics courses spanning popular topics in the subject. His work culminated in his Master’s Thesis, entitled “Gröbner Bases in Orders of Algebraic Number Fields.” In this paper, he explored algebraic number fields as a reduction ring. His research paper focused primarily on a Buchberger algorithm as a means to compute a Gröbner basis. The research paper earned a publication in the Journal of Symbolic Computation in 2002.
The summer before completing his Master’s degree, Dave was awarded an internship with the Nokia Research Center working on programming security algorithms. The experience was highly beneficial and yielded a co-authorship on the paper entitled, “On end-to-end security for Bluetooth/WAP and TCP/IP networks.” The research appeared at the 2000 Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers International Conference on Personal Wireless Communication. Throughout his graduate studies, he also worked as a graduate teacher for undergraduate students at UTA. During this time, he taught courses in business math, college algebra, trigonometry, and precalculus. In 2000, David A Smith completed his Master’s of Science in Mathematics and looked to pursue a career with his newfound expertise.
Upon graduation, Dave moved to Danville, IL. A few months after the move, he became a Corporate Trainer for Lafayette Life Insurance Company. While working in this position, Dave helped train and certify adults on Microsoft Office and helped to create PC labs for office use. In short, this role helped show Dave that he enjoyed teaching others and helped him discover he wanted to go back and teach. In 2004, after two years as a Corporate Trainer, he returned to UTA as a mathematics lecturer. Above all, the prospect of returning to his alma mater to teach was thrilling.
David A Smith’s Time as a Mathematics Lecturer
To begin, Dave started teaching as a mathematics lecturer at UTA in 2004. During his time at UTA, Dave taught students several courses across the spectrum of undergraduate mathematics studies. His coursework ranged from topics in calculus, algebra, number theory, and trigonometry. Dave’s primary goal in the classroom, apart from covering content, was to produce an interactive class. Rather than simply lecture the material, Dave worked hard to build a meaningful understanding in students rather than comprehension. For example, Dave used teaching methods to help students become critical learners, listeners, and thinkers. In short, these goals are vital in his eyes as the course work he covered.
Student feedback for Dave’s lectures and courses shows his passion for a productive learning environment. Overall, students often remarked that he taught using relevant questions and applications rather than merely showing them problems. Likewise, he allowed students to feel free to ask questions and develop their skills further through helpful office hour sessions. His well-organized notes helped students feel confident as they approached new theories or algorithms, even in more advanced courses. Overall, students reported a positive experience while enrolled in his classes.
With a passion for artificial intelligence and computers, Dave pursued classes in computer science in 2016. Dave’s interest in the world of computer science helped enable him to work on a Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP (LAMP) database-driven proprietary website using AWS cloud services. On top of that, he developed an understanding of PHP 7, SQL, and MYSQL. During this time, much of the coursework in computer science revolved around AI, machine learning, and algorithm applications.
